Broadening global horizon and building up rich friendship
First of all, thanks to EWKLP program, my global horizon was amazingly broadened. Honestly specking, it was not my first time to go abroad. Since I joined the media industry, I have been to more than 20 countries on business trips even to South America and Scandinavian countries.
However, it was the work which counted the most on business trips. In other words, I rarely had enough time to look around the place and taste the local atmosphere. As a result, most times, I made myself be just satisfied with only scratching the surface of the unfamiliar culture.
But this time was a huge exception. Course works, group discussion and presentation, field studies, outdoor activities and travelling combined together, really worked to widen my global sights on various issues.

Broadening global horizon and building up rich friendship
These may create new business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region after EWKLP students go back to their home. Amongst the participant countries, it is also anticipated that improved image on Korea will enhance nation-level relationship.
Against this background, it is not an easy thing at all to find out proper words or expressions which best describes my 3 months stay in Hawaii. After nights of twist and toast, I finally came up with two ideas; Broadening Global Horizon & Building Up Rich Friendship.
Needless to say, life at JAIMS and further in Hawaii was 'Golden Period of My Lifetime' mainly because I learned global perspective and met 19 gorgeous friends at the same time. And the expectation that I sincerely had deep in my heart back in Korea, dare to say, almost achieved during the past 3 months.

Broadening global horizon and building up rich friendship
Interviews with CEOs and corporate management convinced me that they are dying for new and practical business principles. In addition, EWKLP will serve a good chance to promote Korea to foreign friends.
In spite of strong economic size and potentials, Korea is one of the undervalued countries in the global stage. Some business sectors such as semi-conductor, shipping and automobile industry, Korean companies are leading the world.
By actively introducing Korean companies and their success stories to classes, I want to let EWKLP participants know more about Korea. At the same time, I will do my best to be more aware of neighboring countries.

Broadening global horizon and building up rich friendship
Before coming to Hawaii, in my application forms to JAIMS, rough expectation on EWKLP went like this: EWKLP will be of great significance to me. By studying various subjects of business, I can not only deepen my knowledge but also harmonize my experience, as a journalist, with theory.
That could explain why lessons from EWKLP will lead me to make more profound articles on business practices. I have little doubt that 3 months in Hawaii will absolutely help me realize my lifetime goal, contributing myself to my country.
In this time of financial crisis, insightful articles can make people happy. It can change the world, too. State-of-the-art business cases will also give new ideas to business leaders in Korea with whom I have had firm relationship.

How I became interested in Southeast Asia(7)
Brief story of how I became interested in Southeast Asia including Indonesia
Nowadays the importance of Southeast Asia is getting highlighted as the region's economic clout has been growing in the international stage. In fact, more and more Korean people and Korean companies are turning their eyes toward Southeast Asia.
However, the presence of Southeast Asia in the Korean society is unfortunately a long way to go. This especially poses pity in the wake of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN this year. My job description for a senior researcher will be prioritized if I am lucky enough to be a part of the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN in Jakarta.
Moreover, I'd like to actively exercise my extensive knowhow on Southeast Asia, expertise of a former journalist and global sense to let the Korean public know more about ASEAN.

In 2015, I began my own business of market research and consulting in Indonesia, KOWATREE based upon my experience in Bandung.
And I have further joined ASEAN Business Center, a Southeast Asia-specialized consulting service provider since 2016. I have conducted several market research projects for the Thailand government.
I also led a Korean fintech delegation to Jakarta so that they would develop the Indonesian fintech market. Nowadays the importance of Southeast Asia is getting highlighted as the region's economic clout has been growing in the international stage.

After closely monitoring the poor public transportation infrastructure in the country, they introduced passenger transportation service to Indonesia by recruiting ideas from the Korean intercity bus system.
Not only expansion of business but also accumulation of knowledge on the local transportation practice was gained while I was serving as a marketing director for 1.5 years. In particular, as a one and only non-Indonesian staff, I tried my best to adapt myself to the Indonesian society by acquiring local languages and learning local culture for survival.
This turned out a big hand to my book for the general public, 'Why the World Pay Attention to Indonesia' and other columns and lectures on Indonesia later.

Brief story of how I became interested in Southeast Asia including Indonesia
This role gave me an opportunity to be hired by QS Asia, an Asia-Pacific branch of QS. As a marketing and PR director for the Korean and Japanese market, I went back and forth between Singapore and Seoul in 2011~2012.
In doing so, I could observe the situation of the contemporary higher education industry in Asia. Actually, this is when I was seriously linked to Southeast Asia first. The reason is that I stayed and worked in Singapore, the most-advanced country in the region.
It was Indonesia in which country I was involved after Singapore. Around the summer of 2013, I made up my mind to apply for a position at a newly-established company by my Indonesian friend and Korean friend in Bandung, Indonesia.

I was also given a chance to take a short-term MBA program at JAIMS in Hawaii, America. JAIMS(Japan-America Institute of Management Science) is an in-house management institute of Fujitsu, a Japan-born IT giant.
My global capacity seemed to be improved a lot during 4 months in Hawaii. I intensively discussed and debated in English with classmates from 10 different countries all over the world at the campus.
Back in the social section at Maeil Business Daily, I was in charge of the Korean MBA rating project in partnership with QS, a world level college rating agency.

I advanced to Graduate School of Law at Younsei University while I was still working for the newspaper company. Unlike my undergraduate course, I chose law as my major because I realized the necessity of legal mind.
My topic for the dissertation was 'A Study on Territorialitatsprinzip and Lex loci Protectionis in the International Disputes over the Intellectual Property Rights(Focused on the Issue of the Governing Law in Von Dutch Case)'.
This is because I wanted to deal with international issues and the international law in depth in which I had been much interested. I was also given a chance to take a short-term MBA program at JAIMS in Hawaii, America.

Brief story of how I became interested in Southeast Asia including Indonesia
I spent most of my early days in the society at a newspaper company after finishing my bachelor's degree of business administration at Seoul National University. Starting from the industrial section followed by the social section, the corporate section and the real estate section at Maeil Business Daily, I worked hard for about 6.5 years as a journalist.
Though I was still young, I could broaden my horizon by interviewing various leaders in the Korean society such as CEOs and university presidents. In addition, I went business trips to more than 30 countries to navigate new articles outside South Korea.
Flights to Americas, Northern Europe and Oceania surely enlarged my global insight. Memories of visiting member countries of Southeast Asia including Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia and writing stories on Korean companies in the region are vivid as ever.

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China and its implication to South Korea
This frontier quest will prove itself to be useful contents to all related parties in the region if relationship among Korea, Japan and China sees rooms for improvement, as a result.
If so, it goes without saying that my reputation as an expert on issues of intellectual property rights will be shining. As such, I will have more chances to study on this field and even probably draw attention internationally.
On this token, an exclusive and high-quality research will be of great help not only to myself but also to the growth of my organization, Korean Academy of Commodity Science & Technology.

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China(11)
Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China and its implication to South Korea
Whenever chances are given either at home or abroad, I will be willingly presenting my book and article to the academic field and governmental sector. As a former journalist, I wouldn't sit idle to promote my publications to the media as well.
As emphasized above, geographical brands haven't been the talk of the town in the Korean academic field. Scholars have failed to spare enough time in delving into the importance of the protection of geographical brands overseas.
Against this background, my wish is that my subject will play a role of a stepping stone for full-fledged exploration on this issue in the mid-long term. If government officials get practical ideas from my project and put them into actions, it will be my excellent pride. This research involves three countries in Northeast Asia.

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China and its implication to South Korea
Needless to say, voices of requesting protection of Korean geographical brands in China will be drawing greater attention as well. In this regard, Japanese government's recent initiatives have meaningful implication to Korea.
Japan's efforts to apply for trademarks abroad and to present guidelines at home are what Korean government should learn for its sake. In other words, this project will address a message that Korean government need to benchmark the researched cases and to come up with necessary measures to prevent potential troubles with China with no delay.
After completion, my research will be published in the form of a Korean book and an English article in the journal of Korean Academy of Commodity Science & Technology in about 3 months.

On the similar context, books and magazines will be valuably utilized for the purpose of a preparatory research. It is manufacturing and entertainment industry which has generated most disputes over the intellectual property rights between Korea and China.
Except a few cases surrounding the use of geographical brands for Korean rice and hot pepper sauce in America, geographical brands haven't developed themselves into big issues so far in Korea.
So studies and researches also have been focused on cases of private sectors, corporate activities in particular. However, keeping the ever-growing influence of China and recent 'Korean Wave' frenzy in China, it is little doubt that geographical brands will become hot-potato like issues soon.

Interviews with professionals at the international affairs division of the JPO and JETRO(Japan External Trade Organization) will allow me to draw an overall picture of the past, present and future of Japanese government’s stance on this controversial issue.
In this regard, interviews with experts at reputable private organizations and universities including Japan Intellectual Property Association, Intellectual Property Management Center of Kyushu University and Office of Intellectual Property of Waseda University will broaden my horizon by supplying thoughtful views.

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China and its implication to South Korea
I've been planning schedules to sites where geographical brands are born and to see what has happened in relation to China. Kagoshima Prefecture and its geographical brands including 県シンボルマーク, かごしまの農林水産物認証マーク, かごしまブランドマーク, かごしま黒豚証明書, さつま地鶏 and 薩摩 are one example.
For this, I've been hosting interviews with involved sections at chambers of commerce and industry of 4 prefectures. Leaders of local communities and officials at the industrial policy section of local governments would be contacted, too.
In doing so, I can clearly recognize the beginning and developments of the various disputes. This on-site coverage will also give me better understanding of Japanese government's subsequent actions to protect its geographical brands in China.

Such a move means a lot to Korean government as similar conflicts are expected to be wired between Korea and China in the near future. The concept of my project is born in this sense with special emphasis on timely and untouched research. In terms of methodology, on-site visits and expert interviews are two pillars of my research.
First of all, throughout mid September to mid October of 2013, I will pay a visit to 4 Japanese prefectures among 9 prefectures mentioned above. Specifically, I will visit Aomori Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture where geographical brands of each prefecture have been broadly known even outside Japan.

It is mainly because Japan’s exports of brand farm products could be adversely affected if Japanese geographical product and brand names are registered as Chinese trademarks.
So far a total of 9 Japanese prefectures, Aomori Prefecture(靑森県), Hokkaido Prefecture(北海県), Yamanashi Prefecture(山梨県), Shiga Prefecture(滋賀県), Wakayama Prefecture(和歌山県), Fukuoka Prefecture(福岡県), Saga Prefecture(佐賀県), Nagasaki Prefecture(長崎県) and Kagoshima Prefecture (鹿児島県) have successfully taken actions to register their trademarks in China.
Though failing to react in advance, Japanese central and local governments have responded in a proper way. They did take relevant steps after disputes over misuse of Japanese geographical brands in China were reported.

Long-lasted disputes and subsequent legal suits over Kagawa Prefecture(香川県)'s Sanuki Udon(讃岐うどん) between Japan's Kabashima Shouji(樺島商事) and Taiwan's Namchow Group are none other than a representative example.
According to the Japan Patent Office(JPO), actual public notices were given or registrations were made on the basis of applications of third parties in China for 6 Japanese prefectures, Toyama Prefecture(富山県), Fukui Prefecture(福井県), Aichi Prefecture(愛知県), Yamaguchi Prefecture(山口県), Kagawa Prefecture(香川県) and Saga Prefecture(佐賀県).
Against this background, Japanese government has accelerated its move in two folds since late 2000's; applying for trademarks in China and coming up with guidelines for related parties in Japan.

Such aggressive drives time to time led to undesirable results accompanied by huge controversy and conflict. More cases have been noticed in the corporate sector.
However, conflicts in the public sector are no less serious. That could explain why Japanese central and local governments have been eager to protect Japanese geographical brands in China.
In fact, it has been alleged that many Chinese have illicitly trademarked or tried to trademark the names of famous Japanese places, names and local specialties in recent years.

For example, a company files a suit against its rivals in neighboring countries in charge of severe copyright infringement. A governmental agency is also embarrassed to catch its publications have been openly used in another country without legitimate process of offer and acceptance.
It is between Japan and China where disputes over the intellectual property rights arise most in Northeast Asia. The fact that Japan is still leading this area and China has been rapidly raising its clout lies in this phenomenon.
As an emerging economy, China has tended to learn lessons from Japan, the most advanced economy in this region in a quick and simple way sometimes without due payment.

This is no exception in Northeast Asia . In
fact, growing number of cross-border conflicts have been observed in this
region. It is mainly because Japan, Korea and China have not only cooperative partnership
but also competitive relationship. Troubles are widely found in both private
and public sectors.
Especially, cases regarding the intellectual property
rights are often being heard recently. This is no wonder in a time when the
significance of the intangible assets is getting unprecedentedly highlighted as
a key source of national competitiveness.

Thoughts on Vocational Education(10)
Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
If my project turns out meaningful and inevitable to enhance the quality of vocational education in Korea, there will be huge media coverage on my project, myself and the AKF. As a former journalist, I'll make the best use of my network on the media sector.
The number of Korean vocational high schools, parents and students, related institutions and even government officials visiting Australia to learn how to efficiently improve vocational education system will be significantly increasing. If my project is accepted and valued in an extensive way, movement to adopt parts of the outputs into real governmental policies for better vocational education in Korea is expected.
Both paper book and e-book in Korean will be published within 6 months after completion of the project. Following 'Should Go to a College?' last year, this book would mark the sequence of my intensive research on the issue of the vocational education system in Korea.

Both paper book and e-book in Korean will be published within 6 months after completion of the project. Following 'Should Go to a College?' last year, this book would mark the sequence of my intensive research on the issue of the vocational education system in Korea.

Thoughts on Vocational Education(9)
Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
My e-book on the Korean vocational education system, mainly featuring 6 exemplary high schools including Induk Technical Highschool and Seoul Girls' Commercial highschool was published last June. Titled 'Should Go to a College?', the book has been provoking nationwide sensation so far.
Please find the attached cover page and English summary as additional documentary evidence. Now I'm communicating with a Japanese publishing agency, 'CUON(www.cuon.jp)' to have my e-book published in Japanese language soon.
Education, particularly vocational education and a subsequent industry-school collaboration model has been my main area of interest ever since I started to work at Maeil Business Newspaper, Korea's No.1 business daily. Succeeding TAFEs in Australia, vocational education system of Germany and Scandinavian countries would be my next target for exploration on this issue.

Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
If my project turns out meaningful and inevitable to enhance the quality of vocational education in Korea, there will be huge media coverage on my project, myself and the AKF.
As a former journalist, I'll make the best use of my network on the media sector. Thoughts on Vocational Education(7)
Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
Represented by TAFEs, Australia has been providing well-established vocational education service to students. It is no wonder that Australia is often cited to have one of the best vocational education systems in the world.
Among the colorful merits, what I want to research most is TAFEs' industry-school collaboration model. One excellent example is Kangan Institute of TAFE's cooperative relationship with nearby automobile industries like GM and Toyota in Melbourne.
This productive and realistic approach to vocational education has been widely known to increase Australia's clout in the global society. Needless to say, it will mean a lot to the Korean vocational education system and related parties.

Thoughts on Vocational Education(6)
Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
Rather, vocational education schools have been regarded as places for less smart students and thus haven't provided timely and practical training to meet industries' ever-changing need. However, time is shifting rapidly.
The corporate sector as a whole is strongly asking industry-oriented vocational education. They warn that if the outdated vocational education system in Korea keeps failing to comply with the voices of the real world, national competitiveness will be shrinking as well.
The reason why my e-book, 'Should Go to a College?' was published last year is in close line with this serious message. Now my eyes are on the advanced vocational training system in Australia.

Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
In Korea, as many as 70~80% high school graduates advance to colleges or universities for their higher education. Many of them just sticks to colleges regardless of their dreams or aptitude.
It is mainly because they have not been welcomed and respected by others without a bachelor's degree. Partly originated from the Confucian culture, a college degree has guaranteed job security and decent income in the Korean society.
That's why most parents push their kids to go to a college even though their sons and daughters aren't interested in an academic career. As a consequence, vocational training at the high school or higher education level hasn't been properly developed.

Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
By introducing the sophisticated vocational education model of TAFE, public awareness of Australia in Korea will be expected to be higher. Then Australian engagement with Korea will become more lively and mutual relationship between the two countries will surely go further.
In that education is an inevitable element of any society, this project will bridge those Koreans not familiar with the leading vocational education system to Australia even in the social and cultural context. In this regard, I have no doubt that my project will best serve the goals of the AKF.

Thoughts on Vocational Education(3)
Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
Vocational training at the secondary and higher education level in Korea has stayed less estimated for a long time. It has a long way to go in both hardware and software aspects.
If my research contributes to awaken the Korean society of the significance of up-to-date vocational education and come up with actual changes, I'll be happily taking any troubles to complete this project.

Then I will catch strengths of the system and deliver essential implications to the Korean vocational education sector, which falls way behind the Korea's recent economic competitiveness in the global market.
Active visits to schools(named below) and industries with cooperation, in-depth observation of classes, detailed interviews with experts of schools and governmental bodies along with local students will be key activities of my project.

Vocational Education in South Korea and Australia
Australia has been acclaimed as one of the best providers of high quality vocational training at the secondary and higher education level.
TAFE(Technical and Further Education) has been at the center of such advanced vocational education system in Australia. What distinguishes TAFEs most is that TAFEs have established solid cooperative relationship with industries over decades.
Through this project, I sincerely hope to see the systematic vocational training on the spot and learn lessons from the industry-school collaboration model.

Walking around Cafes in Indonesia(2)
Introduction of Indonesian Cafes
That finally led to my frequent visits to cafes in the country. By that time, I also started working as an Indonesian correspondent for COFFEE SPACE, a monthly coffee magazine issued in Korea.
Whenever available, I tried to walk around cafes with decent reputation here and there in the nation. Indonesian friends were generous enough to advise me places to navigate. Bookstores were right spots where I managed to collect useful information especially on weekend.
In doing so, I've introduced 20 impressive cafes in Indonesia to COFFEE SPACE. 10 most memorable places out of the 20 were finally came on my e-book, 'Walking around Cafes in Indonesia'.

Walking around Cafes in Indonesia(1)
Introduction of Indonesian Cafes
It was back in 2013 when I first tapped
into Indonesia. Since then, I sometimes stayed in the country over several
months, sometimes purchased round trip flight tickets between Seoul and Jakarta
twice a month.
It all has severed me a precious opportunity to come closer with
the 'Country of Equator'. As my horizon on Indonesia got broadened, the country
came to me with diverse attractions. Coffee, called 'kopi' in the local
language is one of the charming characteristics.
Though somewhat unfamiliar to most Korean
people, Indonesia is the 3rd largest producer of coffee globally
after Brazil and Vietnam. My desire to truly explore the local coffee culture
becomes stronger as my experience on Indonesia gets richer in both quantity and
quality.

Why the World Pay Attention to Indonesia(4)
An Overview of Indonesia
This book aims to introduce still-unfamiliar Indonesia to South Korea in an easy way. 3-year-long experience in Indonesia mixed with curiosity of a former journalist produced 35 stories over Indonesian politics, economy, society and culture. Major cities in Java Island like Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Jogjakarta, Solo(Surakarta) and Bali Island are touched upon, too.
In addition, general map and information of Indonesia as well as simple Indonesian expressions are provided. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely hope 'Why the World Pay Attention to Indonesia' will play a timely and meaningful role of narrowing distance between Indonesia and South Korea further.
It couldn't be better if this publication will prove itself helpful to those South Korean businesses and young people dreaming of their future in Indonesia.
