Japan's move to preserve geographical brands(1)

Japan’s move to preserve geographical brands in China and its implication to Korea

As the wave of globalization is getting bigger and bigger, national economies also impact to each other more frequently. Thus, snowballing international disputes are reported here and there in the international stage.

This is no exception in Northeast Asia. In fact, growing number of cross-border conflicts have been observed in this region. It is mainly because Japan, Korea and China have not only cooperative partnership but also competitive relationship.

Improving the Quality of MBA Education in Korea, Japan and China(8)

Improving the Quality of MBA Education in Korea, Japan and China - Integrating East & West

Moreover, when it comes to class profile, apart from the Asian student dominant class, the number of non-Asian students is better to reach half. This is no exception to faculty profile. According to the 2009-2010 global MBA program of College of Business at Seoul National University, 48 out of 49 full-time professors are Western Ph.D. But to integrate East and West, around 30% should be Asian Ph.D. professors.

Of course, Eastern-Western value integration is not enough to fully improve the quality of MBA education in Korea, Japan and China. We also need additional initiatives, to name a few, active globalization, regional cooperation, practical and timely education. Going without saying, more English class and profile diversity is a must to most Asian MBA schools for real globalization.

Doshisha University introduced degree programs for international students(2)

Doshisha University newly launched two degree programs for international students as part of its globalization pursuit

The B.A. Liberal Arts Program at the Institute for International Education represents a coming together of world-class approaches to university Liberal Arts education. The institute combines private American liberal arts college atmosphere with an emphasis on building partnerships between students and professors in small classes.

Depending upon personal preference, students can also select their own study cluster such as the 'Japanese Society and Global Cluster'. The ISTC provides students with an opportunity to learn Japanese industry's ethics and management practices as well as leading-edge technologies.

It is important because international business communities still highly trust Japanese technology companies. There is little doubt that these companies have generated series of quality products through efficient R&D management accompanied by profound business moral.

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China(1)

Japan's reaction to protect geographical brands in China and its implication to South Korea

Troubles are widely found in both private and public sectors.

Especially, cases regarding the intellectual property rights are often being heard recently. This is no wonder in a time when the significance of the intangible assets is getting unprecedentedly highlighted as a key source of national competitiveness.

Current duties for EWKLP application

Current duties for EWKLP(East-West Knowledge Leaders Program) application

Since late 2008, I have been mainly covering educational field. Schools and private institutions from elementary to adult level are all my coverage. Among them, I spent most of my time by visiting and meeting university personnel and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

Like most Asian countries, Korean people pay great attention to education. I have wrote articles on many issues, establishment of two international middle schools in Seoul(capital of South Korea), shortfalls of Korean MBAs and globalization of Korean universities, to name a few.

I am also interviewing people with interesting stories or influential achievement in the educational circle in particular. My experience says that timely and touching people stories can give the nation hopes for better tomorrow.

Recently, I covered two Korean professors at KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) whose paper will be published in Marketing Science this year. They are highly regarded of doing excellent analysis on ‘Netizen Funding’ in the Korean film industry.

For example, a company files a suit against its rivals in neighboring countries in charge of severe copyright infringement. A governmental agency is also embarrassed to catch its publications have been openly used in another country without legitimate process of offer and acceptance.

Improving the Quality of MBA Education in Korea, Japan and China(4)

Improving the Quality of MBA Education in Korea, Japan and China(4) - Integrating East & West

Last but not least, inducing western applications to Korean, Japanese and Chinese MBA schools is of great significance. It is basically because Asian value needs be passed to Western students so that they can broaden or deepen their horizon in Asian context.

However, it is also true that we still need Western value in many ways. Thus, the ideal model of Asian MBA education can be achieved by balancing Western curriculum with newly-introduced Eastern curriculum. For example, existing subjects such as international strategy, management information system and new subjects such as Confucianism and Buddhism, both of them should make their presence.

Moreover, when it comes to class profile, apart from the Asian student dominant class, the number of non-Asian students is better to reach half. This is no exception to faculty profile. In fact, a variety of new undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered for international students at Doshisha University. Among them, two recently launched courses of 'B.A. Liberal Arts Program' and 'International Science and Technology Course(ISTC)' catch the eyes of overseas students most.

The B.A. Liberal Arts Program at the Institute for International Education represents a coming together of world-class approaches to university Liberal Arts education.
